Toro Kingdom in partnership with medical experts from the United States of America, have kick started an orthopedic health camp to commemorate the upcoming birthday of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The one-week camp which kicked off today 7th April, is being held at Fort Portal Regional referral hospital.
Dr. Tito Beyeza, the kingdom’s minister of health and the lead surgeon in the campaign says so far 15 children have already arrived to receive essential orthopedic surgeries and he expects by the end of the week, they will have operated on 50 to 60 children.
The health camp, according to Dr. Beyeza, is aimed at addressing orthopedic issues prevalent among children in the area.
The surgeries performed included corrective procedures for clubfoot, limb deformities, and other orthopedic conditions that can hinder a child's mobility and quality of life.
Organized as part of the activities to celebrate the king’s birthday, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire , the Prime Minister Tooro kingdom (OMUHIKIRWA), says they celebrate the king’s coronation anniversaries and birthday by giving back to the society so that’s why they chose health.
Omuhikirwa Armstrong appreciated the king’s health initiative as it will help the children to walk after their surgeries and highlighted the king’s wish to have the health camps done in other places in the region so as to bring services to their people.
Dr. Sean Holland, a medical expert from the USA known as Hands of mercy, notes that they voluntarily work on people with disabilities, mostly the young ones, so as to help them afford the free surgeries out of love.
Dr. Archbald Bahizi, the acting director Fort Portal Regional Referral hospital praised the kingdom for the partnership with the Medical experts and the facility to provide the service to the children.
He however, highlighted the lack of an orthopedic surgeon at the regional referral hospital that can be able to do the necessary work.
